Hollowell rocks with his latest ad

James P. Hollowell, the treasurer of the group Brookfield Residents for Better Schools takes aim at Elmbrook Superintendent Matt Gibson in his full page ad that runs in today’s Brookfield NOW. The ad runs opposite a rather weak Vote YES ad that Molly Steffen had posted on the NOW Web site earlier this week. When I took aim at a few things on Steffen’s list of important reasons to vote for the referendum, she complained, “I do not understand why you choose to pick on such small issues.”

If they are small issues, why are they included in the Vote YES ad?

Anyway, a big Brookfield High Five to Hollowell. Here’s his ad:

Brookfield High Schools
April 1st Referendum
-$21 Million dollars to be spent on athletics and physical education (actually $20,983,755)
-33% of total referendum cost
-97% of new construction

Dear Dr. Gibson,

Recently, I provided pubic notification about the estimated $21 million referendum spending on athletics and physical education. You responded quickly, you responded cleverly, but your answer was incomplete. Your reduced figure refers to a selected, qualified amount specifically excluding many of the intended athletic expenditures. Your answer was a subcomponent of the total intended expenditures.

CG Schmidt, the builder, has estimated that the total component of the referendum devoted to athletics and physical education to be $20,983,755.

I Believe that the residents in the Elmbrook School District should have accurate information to make an informed decision. I believe that if the residents are fed inaccurate, incomplete, or deceptive information, they are not going to be able to make a good, informed decision.

I am a strong advocate for an informed community making an informed decision. I am aware that the school board recognizes the huge, disproportionate spending on athletics to be a potential liability that my interfere with the passage of the referendum. I also find it regrettable that the spending package that the board has offered, is so upside down, that is will likely delay improvements to our schools.

Paid for by Brookfield Residents for Better Schools.

I love Jim. Boy has he got it right. The board is jeopardizing the academic future of our kids (delaying voter funding approval) with the inordinate spending on athletics. Their inability to see this is mindboggling, and the adminstration’s effort to hide it disingenuous.

Love the byline that states he is a properly registered organization… perfect sense of humor and perspective from beginning to end.

Thank you for saying what needed to be heard.

This is even better than an ad 🙂

  4. You are such a good reader, Bdad. Thanks for this.

    No problem!

  6. This one will be very interesting. I am going to bet it’ll show a significant lack of due diligence on CAO and the Athletic Directors’ part, and depending on who hears the case, the only logical conclusion will be a bias against female athletics.

  7. On the surface, with the info from this article, I’d have to agree. Sloppy on the part of CAO? Yep.
