A quick review of Brookfield’s proposed 2009 executive budget

By state law, Brookfield’s levy is limited to 2% plus adjustments for debt payments. That means an increase limit of about 4.1%. Indeed the property tax levy proposed is a 4.06% increase.

There’s a lot going on in the paper chase. The first two numbers on a summary page show the actual city budget is down. Reading the description, you find that’s “net of interfund transfers.” (Those are always something to watch.) In reality, the operating budget is up 4.29%.

Both tax rates increase, but they are only used to calculate your bill. It’s the 4.29% operating increase that reflects the spending at City Hall.
