Your statements suggest that the U.S. government is giving an $850 billion handout. That’s false. The government will be purchasing mortgage-backed securities that they can re-sell in the future. We can go round and round about how much these securities will be worth in the long run but they will be worth something. My guess (JUST a guess) is somewhere between 40 and 80 cents on the dollar. Half a trillion dollars is a small price to pay for the long term damage inflicted of our financial system if we do nothing to fix the problem.

I find it ironic that fiscal restraint is all of the sudden an important topic among many conservatives right at the very moment that government spending is so important. In comparison, our foreign policy blunders over the last two decades make this bill look like pocket change.

At least we are getting a sizable return on investment in this case AND assisting the American taxpayer at the same time.

And leadership. Yes, as a committee chairman in Congress Joe had opportunities to exhibit his leadership before the nation. Did you see the Bork and Thomas confirmation hearings he led–fiasco is too kind a description. But I do agree with you that “he makes a hell of a candidate.”
And Sarah Palin will make a hell of a Vice President.

I don’t like any of these phony senator candidates, and I do like Palin, and I don’t know how I can possibly vote for McCain after he voted “yes” to this new even more pork-laden bailout of Wall Street. I think they are all lying about the dire straights, and I think Wall Street is making it look worse so they get bailed out and can preserve the riches for themselves. I say let the chips fall where they may and let the gamblers and deadbeats take their losses. Once Wall Street realizes that they have to fix the problems or take huge losses, they will move quickly to right the ship. I believe it’s all another scam of the taxpayers. Are we so dumb we don’t realize that the government printing another $850 billion of debt is a horrible idea? Don’t we realize that the government is broke and we are going to end up collapsing financially anytime the oil sheiks and China stop financing us? Things are bad…but not for the reasons we are told!
