Judd Gregg withdraws as Commerce Secretary

What do you think did it? Pulling the Census from the Commerce department? Talk of subsidizing mortgages?

Who knows. I have to say I admire Gregg’s decision to walk now, though. It’s awful watching someone compromise into hell, and that’s surely what we would have been seeing.

  1. True leadership and change. How many cabinet appointees have walked away from that title based on values?

Good for Gregg. I wish he had never agreed to take the post but I’m glad he stuck to his principles. This is another example of Obama and his team’s poor leadership and management since anyone with experience would have discussed such a significant deviation in the position’s responsibilities prior to the appointment. You can bet it was not a last minute decision to switch the census to the Whitehouse.
An interesting offshoot of this decision is that now the Dems have a greatly reduced opportunity to secure Gregg’s Senate seat in 2010. This could come back to haunt them in the future.

  3. Perhaps some of those reasons, but I’ve got to believe he had enormous pressure from the RNC and his Republican colleagues. If Franken gets in, Gregg’s leaving (home state governor is Democratic, would have offered a Democratic replacement) would have solidified the fillibuster-proof majority for the Democrats. Never made sense to me why he’d accept in the first place.

  4. I never liked the whole situation either, so this decision suits me just fine.

How long before the smear campaign begins? You know they’ll start something. Although I suspect it will be harder to believe since Obama pulled the Census after announcing the appointment.

  5. Randy in Richmond says:

Now the Whitehouse is saying Gregg “reached out” to the Obama administration for the commerce position. As I’ve said before this administration must think we, the American people, are just plain stupid. Gregg, who is in an awkward position, denies ‘reaching out’.
As was pointed out during the campaign Obama has no experience as a manager or leader, but by god, he looks great not being able to do either.

And there was an agreement with the Governor that he would appoint a Republican replacement for Gregg.

We need a new dictionary of the Obamaese language. Perhaps we could assemble one here.
Possible entries include the new meanings of change, stimulus, reaching out, etc
