If you aren’t already there, you’re late. I don’t remember people staking out locations before, but the tarps are down along Calhoun.
I didn’t know that was allowed.

C’mon your kidding aren’t you? It’s been getting worse for the last 10 years. We used to always stake out our favorite spot about 8am each July4th. I started going earlier and earlier each successive year as others were as well. Within the last 5 years, staking out areas on Calhoun Rd the night before really picked up pace. Last year, coming back from the July 3rd fireworks downtown, the east side of Calhoun was covered. I went down there at 6am on the 4th and could only find one small spot outside City Hall in which to sit.
Best ‘parade mentality/attitude’ was about three years ago when right at the start of the parade some guy with family in tow starts accusing me of sitting in his ’spot’ and having disposed of his tarp. Said he had placed it right where we were. I told him I had arrived there at 7am and there was nothing in our spot. Belligerent as all heck, he got really mad, wouldn’t back down (I didn’t budge either). Wasn’t until he realized I wouldn’t move that he admitted he hadn’t staked the tarp down. The night before the parade we had some hellacious storm with high winds. The guy ended up finding his tarp up against the fence surrounding the football field at BCHS, it had blown away in the storm. Never apologized for his tirade however.

There were a lot of tarps down before lunch yesterday. I wonder if this sort of thing is why the crowds are down? It’s tacky.
Nonetheless, I arrived with kiddos at nine, found a spot on the lawn in front of city hall. Other people made room so the kids could sit on the curb. Everyone was very neighborly. It was a nice morning.

I was in my usual spot on North. There were huge gaps in the parade – about three of them – that made you wonder if it was all over. (I knew not, because I hadn’t seen the youngest yet.)
It was a beautiful day for a parade, though. The cloud cover was perfect.
