This e-mail came a few days ago. Can you help find this person?
On the way home tonight (Friday) from the Starry Nights concert at the Wilson Center, **** and I witnessed a traffic jam near the Little League field.
A white compact car was pulled off to the side of the road and about 5 or 6 cars were pulling around. We saw a carcass, which we thought was a dead possum in the road.
A young man came out of the white car, picked up the creature by the tail, and we realized it was a snapping turtle. The man carried the turtle toward the Fox River.
My question is, who is this brave rescuer? Most people will not attempt to pick up a snapper. They can easily take off your fingers.
Professional wildlife handlers will offer a stout branch for the turtle to grasp, then release it into the wild. My friends, who are wildlife rescuers, had the occasion to pick up a snapper in someone’s driveway with a shovel, then put it in a box covered with bungee cords. The snapper kept jumping around, inside the box, wreaking havoc.
Needless to say, these are not creatures to mess with. We have seen snappers in Lilly Heights Park, under the footbridge. Another neighbor reported that a snapper was on the ground in the park. God forbid that our dog happens on one of these.
Anyway, wish we had stopped to congratulate the brave soul on a job well done. Don’t know that I could have done that. Those turtles look like little dinosaurs.
Think you can find out the man’s name through your contacts?
