Con Air

There’s naive, there’s uninformed, there’s mis-speaking, there’s just being wrong, there’s foolish, there’s lack of experience, there’s getting bad advice, there’s I read that wrong, and then there’s just being stupid. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, recently appointed to the Senate Energy Committee, made this comment over the weekend:

Climate change is very real,” she confessed as she embraced cap and trade’s massive tax increase on Michigan industry – at the same time claiming, against all the evidence, that it would not lead to an increase in manufacturing costs or energy prices. “Global warming creates volatility. I feel it when I’m flying. The storms are more volatile. We are paying the price in more hurricanes and tornadoes.”

Michigan just experienced it’s coldest July on record. The Great Lakes’ water levels have gone through their traditional 30 year cylical rise and are not drying up. Global temperatures have not risen in ten years. In the Antartic ice has grown by 100,000 square kilometers each decade in the past 30 years.
Yet this Senator made a public statement that she can feel global warming when flying. In fact, let’s assume there was global warming (just an assumption), how does one feel that while flying?
This is a US Senator on the Energy Committee making this statement. If I lived in Michigan I would be embarrassed.

  1. The Lorax says:

    Sources please.

Also, climate change is happening. Even Bush wasn’t stupid enough to deny that.

  2. Hey Lorax – sources please. Sure climate change is happening. Right now it’s about 70 degrees. Tomorrow around noon it will change to around 85 or so.

Seriously, our climate has always changed. We simply didn’t enact laws so a few could cash in on it before.

BTW, I wonder if our lovely Michigan representative buys credits to offset all that flying she does. She’s part of the problem you know, but goodness sakes, don’t offer one of these idiots a mirror. They’d meltdown.

Which would contribute to the climate changing in that room.

  3. Hey….let’s put all these gorebal whiners on the melting ice sheets. Oh, wait a minute….those sheets have actually gotten thicker, haven’t they. Never mind.

  4. The Lorax says:

I gave my source – President Bush!

    And yours?

  5. Randy in Richmond says:

“Climate change is happening”. We are in 100 % agreement on that.

  6. Randy in Richmond says:

Actually my post has litttle to do with the enviroment and everything to do with Sen. Stabenow’s remarkable statement. It saddens me that this caliber of person can reach the US Senate and then be appointed to an energy committee.

  7. The Lorax says:

Her statement was Climate Change is very Real. we just agreed on that.

  8. Randy in Richmond says:

Oh yes. It is very real. We agree.
And when I took geography, we called it the changing of the seasons.

  9. The Lorax says:

    Where did you take Geography?

  10. Randy in Richmond says:

Since we are talking , sorta, about carbon emissions, the cash for clunkers program when fully implemented will save the amount of gas Americans use in 4 1/2 minutes out of a year. And it will reduce carbon emissisons the equivalent of about .0108 % per year.

  11. Randy in Richmond says:

    sea⋅son  /ˈsizən/

-noun 1. one of the four periods of the year (spring, summer, autumn, and winter), beginning astronomically at an equinox or solstice, but geographically at different dates in different climates.
    2. a period of the year characterized by particular conditions of weather, temperature, etc.: the rainy season.

  12. The Lorax says:

Mhm, and Climate Change (proper) is the phenomenon where the “particular conditions of weather, temperature, etc.: the rainy season.” are fluctuating beyond their normal, “particular” patterns.

  13. Lorax – What was the normal pattern 11,348 years ago? 5,000 year ago ? 1,000 years ago?
500 years ago? 200 years ago? Ans what specific steps would you take to control sun activity to make it more consistent to producing the normal patterns you would like to see?

  14. The Lorax says:

Good question. I don’t have all the answers but I think poo-pooing all of the options isn’t going to achieve anything.

Cap-and-trade might be helpful, but to tell you the truth i’m more concerned with “something” over “nothing”.

  15. Randy in Richmond says:

You think SNL will do a skit “I can feel global warming in my airplane” ?

  16. No. This week it would have to be about channelling Bill. I’m on her side for this one, but the comedic potential is too great to pass up.

  17. Good call, Kathryn. My money is with your suggestion.
