Dear Italy, today I will mourn with you

The country is stunned by the death of six Italian soldiers in Afghanistan. Flags are lowered today. There’s no doubt the country is sad. Yesterday morning prayers were said at Mass for their souls. Last night there was a moment of silence before the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina at Orsanmichele.

What I don’t have a sense of yet is if this mourning community is placing blame. I’ll try to gather ideas as I wonder around today.

Much is closed in Florence on a Monday. I’m off to Santa Croce to wave to Mikey and Nick. I can’t think of a clever nickname for Galileo Galilei. (Perhaps that’s not a bad thing.)

  1. It just shows that the US isn’t the only country suffering from the war.
