Obama’s being historical again.

He’s taking an entourage to Copenhagen to lobby for Chicago’s 2016 Olympics bid.

From Fox:

Valerie Jarrett told The Associated Press Monday morning that the president will leave Thursday and will join his wife, Michelle, and others in his administration, in making the pitch. Obama would be the first U.S. president to take on such a direct role in lobbying for an Olympics event.

To me it’s just further evidence he’s abandoning the health care issue. But pick up such a folly mission while Iran is shooting longer range missiles? Something is wrong with that picture.

What President Obama – did this turn out to be work after all? I wouldn’t want world events to interfere with your fun or anything…

(PS Arne’s on that trip. A little damage control in the making?)

Comments

  1. But Valerie Jarrett has real estate holdings that can be ‘enhanced” by the Olympics coming to Chicago.

  2. Randy in Richmond says:

As the United States is in the running for the 2018 FIFA soccer World Cup, I would fully expect the President to get on board and use the prestige and power of his office to actively lobby to bring that event to the USA. He is already establishing the precedent this week.

  3. Well do tell. (Most of Obama’s entourage probably has holdings that will fare well.)

  4. If one overseas trip to Denmark can assist in bringing an event that generates billions of dollars in infrastructure spending to the upper midwest then do it. People have been complaining about the lack of tangible stimulus in the stimulus package for almost a year. What do you think this is?

Yeah the host city always loses money hosting the games. So what. Make it happen.

I would have no problem with the President using his clout to bring the 2018 World Cup here either.

  5. Randy in Richmond says:

Congratulations Chicago. You’re in. There are two endings to Obama’s traveling to Denmark. One puts a feather in his cap for helping to secure Chicago as the host city. The second has him looking like he supported a losing cause and effort.

    Again, congratulations Chicago.

  6. Karin Wii B. Sharin says:

The more we complain about how “historical” every lift of his pen is, the heavier the pen becomes.

I don’t see it as a historical move, but a critical move to ensure the time and efforts put forth to receive the games pays off for Chicago (and SE Wisconsin for that matter). The last two cities awarded the games all received a late boost from their country’s leader at the final vote – Obama is simply following the current norm for a bidding country (the other 3 finalists all doing the same).

Damned if he does. Damned if he doesn’t. The trip is only scheduled to last a few hours, having him back within the day to continue work in DC.

    LET’S GO CHICAGO 2016!

  7. You know, Leapin, I just saw someone put the puzzle pieces in order to support your Jarrett claim.

Un….believable. But it looks to be true.
