Voodoo Employment Numbers

In February I made a prediction on this site (# 13) on which I would like to give a progress report. Here was my comment:

“The President must think we are stupid or don’t listen to what he says. He is making this statement over and over: ” The Stimulus Plan will save or create 4 million jobs”. He can’t lose on that prediction. Maybe someone that voted for him can tell me how one ‘counts’ a job saved?

I’ll make a similar prediction: I’m going to prevent 6 tornadoes from forming this year in Oklahoma. Check with me in December to see how I did.”

Even though in 49 of 50 states the unemployment level has risen since February, the President announced yesterday that his Stimulus is on track to create or save 3.5 million jobs by the end of next year. The reality is that 2.7 million jobs have been lost since February. I felt obliged to update my figures, so now I am predicting I will prevent at least a dozen tornadoes from forming in Oklahoma by the end of this year. We are ahead of projections at this time as we continue to use the same models and forecasting systems as the Whitehouse.

And on a personal note I have saved gaining 20 pounds in the last month by not eating a quart of ice-cream and 2 Twinkies daily over the past 30 days. I’m as proud as the President to make this announcement.

35 very nice, competent, well-qualified, experienced, well-liked, hard-working people lost their jobs to corporate budget cuts in a local company this Thursday.

Fortunately our family was spared. However we are not thanking the president.

  2. The Democrats will spin the numbers just like the Republicans did during the Bush years. The jobless numbers trumpeted are just part of the numbers game, as our friend Dad29 could tell us (and has in the past). Three of my children out of work tell me there is no recovery yet.

    It’s called ‘wife math’.

    (hopefully Cindy isn’t reading this)

  4. I guess the way you count a job saved is the same way Cindy counted the 20 pounds she saved from gaining. At least we know Cindy’s being facetious. The president is being deceptive and most of us know that too. How studpid does he think we are? He gets away with this spin because the media lets him.

  5. Randy saved his waistline, Amazed. I’m at my folks eating everything within reach. I will not be spared. 🙁

    Careful Wilson.

  7. As I’ve said before, I actually agree with you on this one. The average American doesn’t care about the terms “saved” or “created”. They just want jobs for themselves and their families. Whether his people are right or wrong on stimulus won’t make a difference, come election time, if the labor market doesn’t improve drastically.

The Obama Administration has messed this one up badly. Underpromise and overdeliver. He managed to do the opposite last winter and has done nothing to address the situation since then.

Now Obama has the near impossible task of getting the unemployment rate down below, say, 7% in the next 3 years (by keeping the status quo). His underestimation of market conditions last winter could definately cost him his job in a few years.

  8. I think he misunderestimated the problem.
