Renoir still floats my boat

I spent a few days on the East Coast, the last three in Washington, D.C. In addition to visiting all of the national galleries, I took a side trip to The Phillips Collection, where I saw this:

Luncheon of the Boating Party by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

I have to say in this day of extreme politics, it’s a delight to step away from it all and immerse myself in art. This one, in particular, took my breath away. I think I’d seen it once when it was on loan to somewhere, but it was nice to see it in its home. It’s a very intimately scaled room and the painting happily fills it.

Consider this post your mini lecture. Hop out there and find some balance. Be sure to take time away from this in order to make room for whatever floats your boat.

  1. Seeing this will be on my tour agenda next trip to DC. Thanks for the tip.
