The book cover

Or what I’m pretty sure will be the book cover:

I’m pleased. Nick Schweitzer did the photo. I did the rest. The whole package does exactly what I wanted and should show up ok in an Amazon library.

The title has seen a number of variations, but this is what seems to be sticking.

  1. Sexy!

  2. Love the title and the cover. Well done!

  3. It’s all about that photo.

Of course now I’m curled into a fetal position in the corner because now I have to get this damn thing done!

  4. Go!Go!Go! I like.

  5. Looks nice. It’ amazing what Nick can do with a polaroid or is it hemorrhoid.

  6. The Lorax says:

I’m sorry but I have to say this….

For some reason the word “perspective” is off. I feel like “A Fairly Conservative Account” sounds more apt – or something like it.

  7. Review? Observation?

Anyone else have a problem w/ the word? It never dawned on me it wouldn’t be a fit.

  8. Not a problem with the word so much as the lack of active language. There’s not much “sell” in the title or the subtitle, no hook.

  9. Oooh. There’s a reason I ask you all stuff.

    That’s a fantastic point.

  10. “Moving America Foward”

? (That’s going to be more polarizing than I had in mind, but I’m willing to do so if you think it will help.)

  11. Forward in a New Direction

(Ooh. That one is growing on me.)

  12. I thought you were trying to link to the blog with the subtitle? Is that a consideration, or not?

In the book, are you describing your personal vantage point on the happenings of the Wisconsin political scene, or documenting the Wisconsin eperience to reveal Scott Walker, the man, as you track his trajectory in the process?

  13. Oh, gee, RL. That’s almost too hard to even manage as a question. Now I’m all paranoid again.

The book has turned out to only be about 1/3 specific to Walker, 1/3 to the changes he spearheaded, and the final third about the recalls and what’s next.

I’ve not done it in first person except for a small portion, and then for a specific reason. It is hopefully coming through in my typical hack-off-both-sides reasoning, but it will manage to be a fairly conservative perspective. In the end there’s no mistaking it’s my POV.

I may stick with the original. It’s not like this thing is going to be on a table somewhere waiting for a buyer. People will find it by looking or word of mouth.

  14. Angst is good. Embrace it.

I think you want the title to be broad enough to pull in google hits for Scott Walker. The subtitle you have makes sense to me if you want to reinforce your blog identity. That is your personal marketing call/strategy. A different subtitle could be used if you want to attract those people you continually hack-off, by using Forward, Together, United, or Un-United, as in the UnUnited State of Wisconsin. 🙂 Kinda like the UnCola of the political genre.

  15. Oh gee that’s good RL

Scott Walker and the UnUnited State of Wisconsin

Double entendres are my favorite. The physical State of Wisconsin and the UnUnited psychological state of Wisconsin.

Another thing to consider is the placement in an Amazon search:

No one has used the word “conservative” in a title, and that could help as there are several books in the queue from a liberal/labor perspective.

Aaaaarrrrggh! Will someone decide and tell me how it all turns out?

  16. I know little about your project or for whom you’ve intended it. I just gathered that if it were headed toward an Amazon listing, it needs a sellier title, or tagline (ie, “How America’s Most Controversial Governor Brought Order to Madison’s Mayhem” I’m making that up, but my point is that the title and tag need some juice, and both need to work harder to get a reader).

If the whole project is a brand builder for your blog, and your intended audience will turn the page simply because they know you’ve written it, probably fine as is.

But the Un-United thing is good. Figure out a way to work in Forward so that the smart people get both that it’s the state motto and a stark contrast in theme to the events of those days, and you’d have a winner, imo.

  17. Wow do I really appreciate this input.

Scott Walker: Pushing Forward in the UnUnited State of Wisconsin.

  18. Mayhem, actually Mayhem in Madison, crossed my mind.
Because UnUnited and living in Mayhem is how I feel about the state of our State.

  19. Getting close, but that sounds like it’s either a biography or his manifesto, and I suspect your project is neither.

How about… The Un-United State of America
(tag) A Fairly Conservative View of the Days the Forward State Looked Backwards

That’s not quite it, bit it’s got a little nuance, a little irony, a hook. Of course, I have no idea if that’s an accurate reflection of the contents of your book — I suppose that should matter…

  20. I’d still like to see Walker in it for the google search, since he is hitting the national stage like the politician that he’s dreamed of being.

A Fairly Conservative View of Mayhem in Madison
The Forward State Looks Back at a (or Wisconsin’s) Year of Mayhem.
Forward Wisconsin Un-United: Mayhem and Malice in Madison with Scott Walker

Occupied Wisconsin: Scott Walker’s solution to Mayhem in Madison as viewed by a Fairly Conservative.

  21. The Lorax says:

Sorry to be blunt but UnUnited sounds kind of silly to me. Here’s my idea. Maybe it sucks too? I’m a bit of a semantician but un-united implies that things simply are not united. disunited implies that they were united, and no longer are. I don’t think the value of Un-Un trumps that definitions dichotomy.

  22. BillyBob says:

I’m not sold on the pic. For those not from the state, it appears to be just a picture of people walking around a Capitol building. Nothing in it really seems to provide any context. Isn’t there a better “money shot” out there?

  23. The Lorax says:

These Disunited Times: A Fairly Conservative Account of Scott Walker’s Wisconsin

  24. It was the best of times; it was the worst of times…

  25. Ryan Morgan says:

A picture with a protestor holding a Walker = Hitler (or something like that) sign might be good.

    *corny alert*
What about “A Walker to Remember”?

I’ll come up with something better than that here eventually… just need some time…. 🙂

  26. On my walk I may have settled on:

Scott Walker and the Un-United State of Wisconsin

    by Cindy Kilkenny from

(It was Randy’s idea via email to put that at the bottom.)

    Notice the “may have.”

I’ll play w it a bit in the photo. I like that photo! But you guys can go to Nick’s Flickr set and pick your favorite.

  27. Is your book scheduled for release post or pre-indictment? 😉

  28. Milton, there are some people when you see their name in the comments you just know it’s gonna change the tenor of the conversation.

The beauty of self-publishing is that I can do a version pre-indictment and then revise it should there be a post-indictment. I doubt it, but then I doubted the recall as well.

BTW, an insider I talked to said 50/50 the other day. And November. So yes, this is out before November. Unless I have another day like today and then it’s never getting finished. 😉

  29. The Lorax says:

It should be “of” not “from” and I still think Un-United looks a little silly, but ok.

  30. BrkfldDad says:

Okay, I’m going to be the stick in the mud. I like your original title. Then again I’m a ‘go with your first instinct/gut’ kind of a guy. The way I look at it, it outta be crisp and clean. I don’t think the title sells you any more books either way, there’s no need to be cute. To me there’s five critical words, Scott Walker, Wisconsin, Cindy Kilkenny. Everything else is superfluous from a content or search standpoint

  31. Ok, I’m good with that. 🙂

Honestly? I’m a nobody, so it’s the marketing I’ll be doing that gets the customer, Or, like bdad said, the search for “Scott Walker.”

    Plus, that one’s already done.

The photo works because the light top allows the title to show well.

If someone picks this thing up and wants to change it all in exchange for a better bottom line to my bank account, so be it. Until then, I gotta keep writing.
