Fairly Conservative Book Club

It’s official. Three readers have indicated an interest in reading Walden and Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau. In particular, we’re looking for clues of Thoreau’s socialist side. By the way the book and the essay are both available from this Web site.

I’ll start a thread for discussion April 17. I’m reluctant to suggest meeting because I know some members enjoy the concept of anonymity. If we find no one wants to join anonymously, we can reconsider. (And although I do like coffee, the offer for Guinness is very tempting.)

If you haven’t read it (not light reading and perhaps not a good ‘club’ book), this one is rather interesting. I know El Gato would appreciate it…

I’d be up for that. It’s a very interesting subject I’ve meant to get at for a couple of months now. Maybe May?

I’ve never actually done a book club, I’m excited! Well, whether or not you all want to join me, I will be discussing with a cool Guinness in hand. Cheers.

Can’t tell a lot from the review, but it sounds like there are social factors contributing to fundamentalism in Europe. Poverty and primitivism are a bad combination. If you are interested in the ideological origins of Islamic radicalism, I suggest this one:

I haven’t read the “new and revised” version, but I sure learn a lot. Definitely not an easy read. Among my conclusions, bin Ladin is a figurehead, albeit a rich one. Ayman al-Zawrahi is the serious enemy–the brain behind the throne.
