The Street of a Thousand Blossoms

That’s tonight’s book club book by Gail Tsukiyama. It was a very quick read, but I was lolling around Door County the week I was reading it, so time was easy to find.

The one thing the book did for me was widen my understanding of the impact of World War II on the Japanese. Sometimes the book felt a little slanted, but it was a work of fiction, so I allowed that. The other dominant component was Sumo wrestling, of all things. I liked that thread more than I expected.

We all know book club isn’t much about the book anyway, so we’ll see what the others say tonight.

So how was the book club? How does the book compare to anything else we might have read, like Shogun or The Good Earth? Good writing? Engaging story?

Much lighter than Shogun. Never read The Good Earth. Yes, the writing was easy reading. The story thought about slowing down in the middle, but eventually picked up.
