This is good, Brookfield, but I doubt very seriously that the reporter so friendly with city hall will ever cover it, so I will.
Last October I wrote this:
It always amazes me what becomes news. Mayor Jeff Speaker had actual campaign finance violations, but it didn’t end up on the front page of the MJS. Yesterday’s story identifies a husband and wife that gave generously to Milwaukee aldermen. Here’s two pages of Speaker’s last full campaign finance report. Asif Rana and his wife, Naheed Mughal are on the second page at the bottom.
Remember the blog I wrote about campaign memories and the comment that I knew I was in over my head? Well now you have all of the pieces to put the puzzle together yourself.
I am not saying anything was illegal. But you need to know that buying influence is happening in Brookfield with Mayor Jeff Speaker. And it’s not even front page news.
Mr. Rana, Mayor Jeff Speaker’s generous campaign contributor, is now being indicted for fraud in federal court. What’s really interesting is that the MJS only barely picked up the connection to their own front page story on the Rana’s contributions to the Milwaukee council.
Rana is listed on the bottom of the second page in Speaker’s campaign report.
I also shared this campaign memory in October of 2007:
In over my head. I received a call a week before the election from a gentleman that described himself as a member of the Indian community. He told me that the group had lots of money and influence and wanted to know if I would take their support in exchange for… You get the picture. I explained I appreciated his call but his support would have to be given freely. I did see where the entire front page of Mayor Jeff Speaker’s last campaign statement was full of this group’s money. I’m waiting for the exchange that was suggested - I’ll let you know when I see it.
Yes, that was Rana. Do you all understand that our Brookfield Mayor is one check away from crooked? Look at the list of names that preceed Rana’s on the report. It was a lot of money for an incumbent that lost the primary.
Now that Rana’s in trouble I doubt the suggested favor will materialize. That will be to Brookfield’s advantage and one less thing Speaker can screw us with on the development front.
