Well, I got there in better light. Still not wild about the photos, but I’m really happy I tried.
The young men were very kind. Yes, there was a flying word here or there. They usually coincided with landing too hard or losing the board mid-air. In general, it’s a culture I’m very pleased to witness. Lots of respect. Lots of shared knowledge.
It dawned on me about halfway through shooting that I actually voted to put the park in a few years ago. I sat up front in the Council chambers. It was the first time someone shoved scripture on my desk in hopes that I would change my mind. The park addition was evil according to one very forceful advocate.
Didn’t see any indications of that today.
It was a great feeling. These guys love what they are doing. I’m more than happy to have been a part of it.
(I reserve the right to take more of these! Still looking for the right light. I didn’t get to shoot nearly as fast as was needed and still keep the film speed down. Maybe tomorrow…)

As a Web person, I have to ask - did you get releases with permission for you to post pictures of these young people on an internet site?

I’ve been advised it’s not necessary. If you have proof otherwise, do tell.

You might want to check that advice you got, especially if the young people in your photos are legal minors.

Did you read your own post? Here is the defining paragraph.
“Releases are generally not required from people who are identifiable in a photograph of a street or public place, provided that the photograph is reasonably related to the subject matter and the identifiable people are not the focus of the photograph. An example of a permitted use would be a photograph of the Rockefeller Center Ice Rink that was used to illustrate a book about Rockefeller Center or about New York City attractions, even though many people may be identifiable.”

Why don’t you e-mail CNI and the MJS if you’re so concerned? They do the very same thing, and they do it for profit!
It just doesn’t worry me at all.

If you can tolerate another tangent: what was the scripture used to argue against the skate park?

Cindy
Seems like the park has had the opposite effect.

Kathryn, I don’t remember. It might be on tape somewhere what was said, but I didn’t keep the copy she gave me. (Which I just this second realized was probably a public record and I should have!)
Randy - that’s cool! You taught me something I didn’t know about our community. There are three (I think) parks in Waukesha County. Some of the photos must have been from the other two as well.

Cindy, I think your ego has finally obliterated your common sense.

Ego? From a few crummy pictures at the skate park? I really, truly, think I’m ok here. One of the workshops I’ve done covered the issue pretty thoroughly. If one of the guys happens to be your son, say so and I’ll be more than happy to remove the photo that’s making you so worried. Otherwise, can you accept the fact that we disagree and move to the next subject? No doubt you’ll disagree there, too.

If my daughter were in one of the pictures I’d be as thrilled as I know she would be also.

I don’t understand the hissy fit going on over several truly decent (and good-natured) photographs. Those teens and young adults were probably flattered that someone like Cindy was there to not only watch, but to take pictures of their talent.
From what I read, it looks like Waukesha Mom is doing this only because she doesn’t like Cindy.
