OMG! Real news from the MJS! It’s a Hooters in Brookfield

October 8, 2008 at 6:19 pm --by Cindy Kilkenny · 36 Comments

Aren’t we proud. If you read the brief, you’ll notice Mayor Jeff Speaker wasn’t available for comment.

Is he ever? I’d have to think his slumlord business is taking so much time that he really can’t be available for his very well-paid job–like putting a Hooters on Bluemound Road near his very important pet project Percheron Square.

At least all those new office workers will have a place for lunch.

Reporter Lisa Sink was right to bring up that horrid orange paint. We’ll see how powerful our dear mayor really is on this one. If Speaker hands over the $9,000 prize from Economic Development for this liquor license, I’ll be ticked.

Does anyone else remember the Mayor and his sidekick Paul Wartman being “all about restaurants?” Look at the quality they are able to attract.

**Update** Is it the bikini contests our Mayor can’t wait to attend? In case you live in a cave, here’s a pretty mild look at the culture. It’s certainly something for our restaurant boys to dream on.

uh ….. chicken wings … beer and pretty girls…. and the downside is what?

  • 2 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 8, 2008 at 8:27 pm

But you won’t be able to afford it - so I guess temptation will be minimal.

  • 3 Wilson828 // Oct 8, 2008 at 8:43 pm

    LOL

  • 4 Brookfield // Oct 8, 2008 at 9:03 pm

It’s a shame that this business transaction occured and local citizens didn’t recieve notice until recently. Was this not discussed during previous Council proceedings? Why were we not informed by our two Alderman? Mayor Speaker has to hear from aware, grounded and miffed citizens. Women become objects, objects become playthings and hearts get broken.

  • 5 Randy4sam // Oct 8, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Their wings are really very good–go for the 3 Mile Island. Here on Tuesdays for lunch it’s 2 for 1, 20 wings for the price of 10, a good value during tough financial times.

    Women become objects??????????

  • 6 Wilson828 // Oct 8, 2008 at 9:24 pm

yeah I agree Randy ….. what’s this object thing? Get a life Brookfield…. it’s just a Hooters…. it’s a restaurant for chrissake. Would a McDonalds get discussed and the action of council scrutiny that you suggest? Get over it.

  • 7 Randy4sam // Oct 8, 2008 at 9:32 pm

I’m curious. In Brookfield do citizens have a say on restaurants or other businesses? Isn’t it just a matter of having the correct zoning? I would expect to get an alcohol license requires a public hearing. Either the zoning allows a restaurant or it doesn’t. Why would an Alderman notify the citizens for a routine restaurant opening?

  • 8 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 8, 2008 at 9:36 pm

    It’s just a Hooters.

For the record, I think Hooters is pretty scummy. I’ve never been to one, and that’s my choice.

There’d be little way to stop the transaction. But, there’s a lot of ways to stop the liquor license the city must issue. Pedro’s had one, though. It would really be hard to deny it in the same location.

We are technically out of licenses in Brookfield. Extras are purchased at $10,000 each, but the city refunds $9,000 through an Economic Development grant. Like I said above, if they do, we can lay on the Mayor pretty heavily for that. I expect him to use the city attorney to transfer the old Pedro’s license instead of issue a new one, though.

    But it’s Just a Hooters.

Maybe I should start a chain called Dick’s Wonder Dog and dress the waiters like the naked cowboy on Times Square. What do you say, girls?

  • 9 Wilson828 // Oct 8, 2008 at 10:11 pm

You’ve never been to a Hooters but you think they’re scummy? You base this upon what? A prudish upbringing or simply you don’t like wings?

Open your Dick’s Wonder Dog …. so what. But other than a name will you have a brand identity or be known for something like a food?

    How close-midwestern-minded you are.

  • 10 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 8, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Whoa! Did you have stock in Hooters, too?

Selling sex is one subject where I don’t mind keeping a closed mind.

The dogs would be as close to Sonic’s chili cheese footlongs as possible, by the way. A fine selection of micro brews, cheese tater tots, some onion rings.

We could have speedo contests in the snow!

  • 11 Wilson828 // Oct 8, 2008 at 10:26 pm

    (your response made me laugh)

Look …. there’s a Hooters in Mall of America in Mpls. There are Hooters all over the place. Sometime go to one. Take your kids or go with your husband or some friends. Then, after you’ve experienced it - then rate it. What you’ll find are young girls serving fried chicken wings, beer and other unhealthy foods. There’s no sex. There’s no bare breasts (gasp). There’s no fondling of the waitresses. There are no single unshaven men in raincoats standing around. Go to one. No one is selling sex. Whatsamatteryou?

  • 12 Dean Mundy // Oct 8, 2008 at 10:32 pm

I’ve never been to one, even though they started in my hometown.

I always figured there’s a reason they put waitresses in skimpy restaurants–the food sucks and it’s to take your mind off of it.

But I do know of churches that hold Bible studies in them so maybe I don’t know too much.

Hey I’m conservative, right? I’m not smart anyway.

  • 13 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 8, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Wilson828 - I’ll go to one when they put young men in the same outfits and let them work as waiters.

    Deal?

  • 14 Wilson828 // Oct 8, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Ok …so you’re stubborn about it. Fine.

    Can’t have everything.

Truth be told, you should have been mayor. You’re well educated, you have broadened your horizons with travel, you engage if not thought provoking debate, at least entertaining debate. You’re a half decent photographer and you are modern in using an iPhone and other electronics.

But you’re hung up on sex and a prude. And close minded about it. And it’s not even sex - it’s a restaurant for gosh sakes!

    I can live with this.

I’m tired and logging off and going to bed. Tomorrow I’ll debate you about something else… probably something political.

(maybe you’re this way because you’re a wife and that’s what wives say and do)

    ‘g nite

  • 15 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 8, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Why is it I feel like I need a shower after you offer a compliment? I guess I should say thanks, anyway.

The funny thing is - I’m not a prude. I’ve sunbathed on some of the world’s finest beaches wearing less than our friend Mr. Cowboy. I swim in the buff. I taught my kids the details early with real words and real what ifs. And believe it or not, I waited tables for a while where I’d gladly give into the odd copped feel if it meant better tips. (Sadly, it usually did not translate that way, though.)

What I’m against is marketing mediocre food with scantily clad waitresses and calling it wholesome. If you want a titty bar, have a titty bar. Don’t claim to be good for the whole family.

    Goodnite.

  • 16 Randy4sam // Oct 8, 2008 at 10:59 pm

For all of you who have never been to a Hooters– you are all wrong. I’m a conservative. Our bowling group goes out to eat afterwards and once a month is Hooters. There are 9 of us who go out , 5 women and 4 men. The food is excellant and I’ve never seen any sex sold there. The women in our group have gotten to know the waitresses and ask for certain ones if available. When the first Hooters opened here it made a tiny splash and we now have three. No doubt they are designed to cater to young males but without good food no restaurant chain will survive regardless of the servers’ dress. And you can’t buy their stock–they’re privately owned and most are franchises. I’ve never seen them advertised here as a family restaurant.

  • 17 Greg Kowalski // Oct 9, 2008 at 12:41 am

    Cindy,

After reading several of Wilson’s comments, I must say you have quite the sarcastic, comical, and upbeat audience! I especially love this piece:

There’s no sex. There’s no bare breasts (gasp). There’s no fondling of the waitresses. There are no single unshaven men in raincoats standing around.

HILARIOUS! I think that’s the first time I’ve read a comment on any site with such bold statements. I mean c’mon, fondling of the waitresses!?

For those who compare Hooter’s as a local On The Border, you’re sorely mistaken.

And Wilson, share your wisdom and debate on other blogs…like MINE!

  • 18 Lucky Lady // Oct 9, 2008 at 7:42 am

I think the funny thing is that Dan Ertl is concerned that the architectural design will be in compliance to Brookfield standards! Judging from other Blue Mound Road developments, that must mean crowded, minimal parking, and roof lines that dazzle your eyes. Add confusing parking lot patterns to that list. Just what Blue Mound Road needs is more road traffic to jam up the area. I hope they choose a lovely shade of orange.

    wilson828 -

“But you’re hung up on sex and a prude. And close minded about it. And it’s not even sex - it’s a restaurant for gosh sakes!”

if it isn’t about sex, why are the waitresses required to wear tight tank tops and extremely short shorts?

and where are the male servers?

  • 20 Wilson828 // Oct 9, 2008 at 12:58 pm

Waukesha Mom ….. I dunno. I mean is this really that important? Is there really something wrong with eating fried food that isn’t good for you, drinking beer and having a pretty girl serve it to you? Is this all that terrible?

And yours and my definition of “sex” is really quite different. How is this different than the car hops on roller skates in the 1950’s?

  • 21 Randy in Richmond // Oct 9, 2008 at 1:07 pm

    Waukesha mom
The reason it isn’t about sex is that it’s about sex appeal.
And the male servers thing is old news, settled in a 1997 lawsuit, and in 1996 the EEOC dropped it’s effort against Hooters after wasting over $22 million of taxpayer funds.
And on a personal note, you know what it’s really about–is capitalism. A friend’s daughter used to work there and averaged $200 per shift. This past May I attended her wedding which was held just after her graduation from Virginia Commonwealth University.
And are these young ladies on an ego trip? You bet they are. It’s an unpaid benefit.

  • 22 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 9, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Wilson828, God willing, we’re a little past 1950 in our definition of a woman’s worth to society.

I’d love really handsome young men to swarm around me and flatter me in hopes of big tips while eating a hot fudge sundae. The business model would be decried as preposterous if I put it to paper. Yet our society still revels in you boys hitching up your pants and eating where the pretty girls are. Heck - it still has women taking their 10 and 12 year old daughters to these places! (Jeff Wagner had a caller that was ever so proud of her reasonable approach.)

I don’t have to go there - and I won’t - but I also am not wild about it being plunked down in the middle of the community I call home. And I can use all of the tools in my toolbox to get them to move to someplace like New Berlin. You’d only have to drive a couple of extra miles.

  • 23 Wilson828 // Oct 9, 2008 at 1:18 pm

Fair enough Cindy. Have a good day.

(not likely they’ll go to New Berlin - those hillbillies are still having problems moving away from outhouses to inside plumbing)

  • 24 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 9, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Sorry about the freaky comment problems, guys. We’re talking about sex again and the spam filter is going crazy.

  • 25 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 9, 2008 at 1:41 pm

Wilson828 - why so dismissive? You want mediocre hot wings served by pretty girls in tight clothing. I don’t. I’m not sure that it’s worth a cold war.

  • 26 Kathryn // Oct 9, 2008 at 1:43 pm

My navigation bar doesn’t even say Fairly Conservative any more. When I want to visit, I click the one that says “You have been blocked by PureSight.”

  • 27 Randy4sam // Oct 9, 2008 at 1:55 pm

    Cindy
My geography isn’t great. But Rush keeps playing out-takes from a McCain/Palin rally in , I think, Waukesha. Apparently McCain is naming names on the financial failure. Are you getting your 15 minutes of fame today?

  • 28 Grant // Oct 9, 2008 at 1:58 pm

I have been to Hooters two times in my life…once in Florida and once to the one on the southside. I didn’t find them anything to hoot about. The girls were average, the wings were tolerable, the beer was cold, and the ambience was boring. I don’t feel it’s a threat to the morals of Brookfield.

We have way too many restaurants, with more coming, and too many failures. It might be good to have one come and be successful for a change.

If a female is willing to wear a brief outfit in order to get tips out of men, that’s certainly her choice, and it’s nothing compared to what we see at any beach and is coming into our homes on TV…to say nothing of the internet. If we’re not complaining about that, we are being hypocritical about Hooters coming to town. IMHO.

  • 29 Wilson828 // Oct 9, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Oh my gosh, I wasn’t being dismissive …. I thought we had concluded and arrived at a comfortable place of disagreement. Ready to move on to another topic.

Apparently you care to engage further. Okay.

But to directly answer your question - yes. I would prefer substandard food served by pretty girls. It’s fun. It makes me happy.

But contrary to Waukesha Mom who previously inferred that this was about sex - I’m sorry but this isn’t ’sex’. Simply looking at pretty girls is not having sex. If that were true a lot more women would be pregnant.

And here let’s go one further and talk about perceptions and marketing and other related topics. (because that’s what this is) …. when I used to manage a higher number of convention vendor booths for my company I would staff them with bright and experience pretty girls. I wanted to attract people verses unattractive bright and experienced girls. (this outta get ya going today).

Now, I’m not suggesting that all women should be walking around naked - we really wouldn’t want that - but I’m suggesting that pretty people are just … well … nicer to be around.

Anyway …. yup…. pretty girls, beer and wings. Great. Actually truth be told, I’m more of a wine person, with really nice dinners and never frequent the Applebee, Hooters or otherwise greasey spoon places. I like Mitchells Fish Market, Bravo, Bone Fish and places like that. Maxies Southern Comfort is nice too. And pretty girls who are my waitress is a plus.

(I can tell …. I’ve dug a hole and now you’ll shove me in it but I’m gonna hit submit anyway)

  • 30 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 9, 2008 at 2:08 pm

    Wilson828 - glad I was wrong.

Call me sometime and I’ll fix you dinner here.

  • 31 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 9, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Randy - could be! Now I’m sad I opted to have my heater fixed instead head to the rally. I’ll listen in the car…I’m off to scare up some photos.

  • 32 Cindy Kilkenny // Oct 9, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Kathryn - that’s a hoot! (Pun so intended.)

  • 33 Randy4sam // Oct 9, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Cindy How can you say they are mediocre wings when you’ve never been there? I’ve been lots of times and the wings are tasty and as hot as you want. If they would put some of their wings in another named restaurant’s box and you ate some you would love them-unless you’re not a chicken eater which makes for a moot point.

I think the lifting of the short selling ban on banks today may have been in play towards the end. I thought it would have hit right in the morning, we’ll see if that’s what played in the afternoon. I am optimistic that it’s nearing the bottom and we’ll see a recovery of sorts in the next few days. Even in the direst of days, the rock bottom has been a 40% drop and we’ve just just surpassed that. Historically, it’s calmed down at that point, let’s hope. Now, if I just had someplace that I could get a beer and some wings, I could take the edge off…
