“McCain castigates Obama on judges”

Castigate: to subject to severe punishment, reproof, or criticism (Merriam-Webster online) What a cool word!

Anyway, that’s the title from an AP article on the Web. Senator and Republican Presidential hopeful John McCain stepped into North Carolina to deliver a foundation for leadership while the Democrats wait for results there and Indiana. Among other points of how to pick a justice he nailed Senator and Democratic runner Barack Obama for voting against John Roberts.

“Senator Obama in particular likes to talk up his background as a lecturer on law, and also as someone who can work across the aisle to get things done,” McCain said. “But … he went right along with the partisan crowd, and was among the 22 senators to vote against this highly qualified nominee.”

“Apparently, nobody quite fits the bill except for an elite group of activist judges, lawyers, and law professors who think they know wisdom when they see it — and they see it only in each other,” McCain said.

The article mentions that Senator Hillary Clinton voted against Roberts, too, but the focus stayed on Obama. Perhaps that’s because the speech took place in North Carolina where Obama is expected to win, but maybe because Obama is still considered the eventual Democratic nominee.
