Bedlam - round two

January 29, 2008 at 10:17 am --by Cindy Kilkenny · 9 Comments

Tonight the Brookfield East Spartan boy’s and girl’s teams head to Brookfield Central for the yearly match up. Last year school officials placed City of Brookfield officials at doors to keep the number of spectators to a limit. In my opinion it was a ploy to fake the need for expanded facilities.

Churches don’t build a sanctuary for Easter and Christmas crowds. The high schools shouldn’t build field houses at each school to house tonight’s crowd.

Tonight might be a little different, though. There’s a winter storm warning that kicks in at 5:00 p.m.

Maybe Im partial as a former Spartan Student Athlete but I am always in favor of expanding our Sports Facilities. From 8th grade through sophomore year of high school I worked almost every saturday staffing Music on the Move events to raise money for East 2000 and Beyond to get the football stadium revamped, and we ended up with a much improved facility. Why would it be such a horrible idea to build field houses?

HouseS, aren’t needed. House? Maybe. Especially if the district could solicit naming rights in exchange for significant funding.

There’s a debate, Dan, that we’ve un-grown the two high school concept. I think building ONE competition gym would be a good start in combining the schools.

Were you ever a high school athlete? There is a certain amount of pride in contesting on and defending a home field. Bad argument to put up to former Brookfield East Football player… the whole reason we had to start East2K and Beyond was because we couldnt get funding for a new stadium… at that time it was thought that for every home game Brookfield East students should just drive over to Central and use their facilities. Bad idea. I understand your push for a single monster school, but I dont think the first step would be to try and unite the schools through athletics… then again I dont have a good answer.

Sort of, I had outside activities and was in the band where I was a featured twirler. I understand the home field concept. I spent plenty of time on the 50 yard line as well as center court.

All I’m suggesting is a SHARED field house of the monster variety that the district seems to covet. Both schools could hang their banners. The scoreboard could reflect either with the home court advantage. There would still be home court advantage except for the one game each year where East and Central would have to share.

When there weren’t games the gym could serve as practice space for varsity boys and girls sports and free up gym time at either high school. (Varsity players are usually older and more likely to have their own transportation.) There might even be room for some community access to walking tracks or such.

Forget the bedlam… Let’s see, a supersize storm is predicted, Gibson is the only local super to hold class. Then, extreme cold/wind, but minimal snow is forecasted and he cancels ALL after school activities. I just don’t get him…

I guess walking tracks are a perk for the old stingy people out there opposing all the referendums.

BrkfldDad - the news channels are really hyping it all. I read visibility of 1/4 mile for 2 hours or more. As a mom that would have had a kid on the road, I’m ok with this decision. (Hey, thanks for the notice - I just realized you scooped the youngest on whose news I posted the update.)

Dan - “stingy old people…” Aaack! Your youth is showing.

Don’t get me wrong, I am okay with his decision tonight, just can’t figure out the rationale he used on the former decision! I too would have a kid (new driver at that!) on the road tonight. Can’t believe I scooped, we got the recorded message at home at 2:32pm from the school!

Ah, got it. I understand your quandary now.

Our call came in at 4:05. Another thing I approve of - the calling system. Sure, sometimes you roll your eyes at another “Parent Network” call, but every once in a while it’s useful.

And where is all that blowing snow?
