Fairly Conservative

Anyone else feeling it?

October 8, 2008 at 4:43 pm --by Cindy Kilkenny · 14 Comments

That temptation to be burned out. I’m turning off the tv. I’m blogging less. (Nah, you don’t really seem to mind.)

Republicans are frustrated by the lack of momentum in the McCain campaign. Democrats are frustrated that Obama can’t close the deal.

Did I mention the market has fallen off a cliff?

SO - how are you all holding up? Any change to the regular day? Any life-changing decisions on the horizon? Let me know if you are feeling it, too, and how you are coping.

What Democrats are these you speak of? I don’t know anyone left who thinks Obama hasn’t closed the deal. Have you seen this lately?

Polling is barely moving outside the margin of error. Polling was a real problem in the primary against HC, remember? I’m not confident in polling.

Emotionally, neither candidate has closed the deal.

I would have to say the family has got more negative recently on just about every issue. Otherwise, life does go on.

It’s been very interesting to hear more about personal economics than usual, that’s for sure.

On a different note, some friends and I finally met up at the Cheesecake Factory. I haven’t been there in MONTHS. Whether or not that’s a personal sign of an upswing in my life is yet to be seen, however. :-)

Why Wilson? What impetus kept your money playing in the index (or worse)? But thanks for doing the patriotic thing.

Life goes on here Cindy. Work is very busy and getting ready for bird season with the new apprentice pup, the master pup and a new semi-automatic shotgun. WOOHOOO!

Yeah, feeling it. Took a break and posted a funny by Lisa Nova. A funny parody on Eternal Flame. Got caught up on Heroes. Spent time with my daughter watching Disney all night last night. She sat in my lap, we had some ice cream, and watched TV.

Today the sun is out and I feel better.

I found myself watching Disney, too, and the youngest was upstairs plowing through AP US history!

Steve - I have a bunch-o-401K’s …. between my wife and I ….. we repositioned our money last year to meet our current age, tolerance for risk, etc. We selected from within those 401K’s, funds that were appropriate. And still, we took a bath. I’ve been saving all along throughout the years. During the last down cycle from 911, I remember taking a real bath then …. I was more aggressively in the market in the 401K’s then … when statements would come I’d toss them in a drawer and not look at them. I thought at the time, onward, keep investing and historically it will come back. And it did. And I made all my money back and then some. Like I said I did some repositioning last year to off set market swings based upon my present situation but it wasn’t enough. Most American’s have 401K’s. Up until Monday, every leading and not so leading, authority said to stay in play in the market with your 401K. I did. Most others did too. Everyone has taken a bath. I had some cash last year that I have keep in cash position, again because of my age. Ten years ago I would have put that cash into something - but again, because of my age, I was more conservative. I’m glad I did. So when you ask me why I stayed in play with the market my response is that I did in a wide eyed manner based upon solid consistent investing practices from over the past 20 years of information being published about supposed if you will, best practices for the average guy like me. I work for a living like most of you. My money was earned, not won, not inherited. I grew my savings like s steady Eddy over time with a consistent investment strategy.

I have very definite opinions as to why we’re in this situation - it starts with poor …. very poor underwriting decisions for the home mortgage situation to greed on Wall Street. I think that the delay from the House of Reps on that Monday was instrumental in creating the runoff and panic that we’re still in. I’m not unlike most - I didn’t want to pay tax dollars to save anyones ass - only my own and the average guy like me. It’s purely selfish that I supported the bailout but I thought then and still do that we lost the momentum of saving the Dow because of the hesitation. And then when it did get passed it had too much pork in it. The stock market is purely emotional without regard to logic or any common sense. What legislators like Jim Sensenboober did to us was cause lasting panic in a situation that is now out of control.

So, we’ve repositioned some money and we’re still in play in the market in our 401k’s. You won’t make it back unless you’re in play. And we are still contributing the max we can contribute. Buy low … dollar cost averaging and all that.

If you had a 401K you took a bath ….. period. Unless you were in an interest bearing bond fund … and then I gotta ask you why you even had a 401K….. but everyone I’ve spoken with is deep…. and I mean deep into 6 figure losses.

Can’t time the market ….. especially for 401k’s. And we won’t know the ride back is back until after it happens and is over. So, gotta stay in it to be in it.

    Pray.

(And after our prayer …. go out for a beer and wings …. go to Hooters! Maybe we’ll bump into Cindy!)

Heck, I may need a job as a waitress there if things don’t get better soon. :)

I’m excited to get away from life for awhile and watch my Cubs take on the Phillies in the NLCS……er…..maybe not.

    Even baseball sucks these days.
